How to Introduce Yourself in Portuguese
A complete, copy-and-adapt script for any situation — meeting new people, networking, talking with your partner's family, or calling Brazilian customer service.

Introducing yourself is the first real thing you'll ever do in Portuguese — and it's the moment most learners freeze. You've studied the words, but someone says "Oi, tudo bem?", looks at you expectantly, and your mind goes blank.
Have a script ready — fluent-sounding introductions aren't improvised.
Even native speakers run on a set of familiar patterns. Learn a handful of building blocks and a few ready-made scripts for the situations you'll actually face, and you'll never freeze again.
Note on "you": Brazilians say você for "you" in almost all everyday situations. You'll rarely need anything else.

Script 2
Networking and professional situations
A work event, a conference, a business meeting. Slightly more formal, leads with what you do.
Your script (in Portuguese)
"Boa tarde! Meu nome é [name]. Eu trabalho na área de [field], na empresa [company]. Muito prazer em conhecer você. Eu estou começando a aprender português para trabalhar melhor com nossos parceiros no Brasil."
What it means
"Good afternoon! My name is [name]. I work in [field], at [company]. Very pleased to meet you. I'm starting to learn Portuguese to work better with our partners in Brazil."
Useful professional add-ons:
💡 In professional settings, boa tarde / bom dia (rather than oi) and muito prazer em conhecer você set the right tone. You can absolutely still use você — it's standard in Brazilian business.
Script 3
Meeting your partner's Brazilian family
The one that matters most emotionally. Warmth beats correctness here — Brazilian families will adore that you tried.
Your script (in Portuguese)
"Oi! Muito prazer, eu sou o [name] / a [name]. Eu sou namorado da [name] / namorada do [name]. Estou muito feliz de conhecer vocês! Estou aprendendo português para poder conversar com a família. Desculpem o meu português, ainda estou aprendendo!"
What it means
"Hi! Nice to meet you, I'm [name]. I'm [partner's name]'s boyfriend / girlfriend. I'm so happy to meet you all! I'm learning Portuguese so I can talk with the family. Forgive my Portuguese, I'm still learning!"

Script 4
Calling Brazilian customer service
The most formal and functional situation — and where a script saves you most, because phone calls are hard in any second language.
Your script (in Portuguese)
"Bom dia. Meu nome é [name]. Eu sou cliente e estou ligando porque preciso de ajuda com [issue]. Desculpe, eu não falo português muito bem — pode falar devagar, por favor?"
What it means
"Good morning. My name is [name]. I'm a customer and I'm calling because I need help with [issue]. Sorry, I don't speak Portuguese very well — can you speak slowly, please?"
Survive the call with:
💡 Pode repetir, por favor? and pode falar mais devagar? are your lifelines — memorize them cold.
The universal formula
Every introduction follows the same simple shape:
Greeting → Name → (Where you're from) → (What you do) → (Why Portuguese) → Question back
Mix the building blocks to fit the moment. Here's the shortest version that works almost anywhere:

Four lines — and the E você? at the end hands the conversation back so you're not stranded.
A few tips that make a big difference
Practice it out loud, not just in your head. An introduction lives in your mouth, not on a page. Say your script aloud until it flows without thinking. The goal is for it to come out automatically when nerves hit.
Lead with warmth, not accuracy. Brazilians are famously welcoming to learners. A smile, muito prazer, and an honest 'meu português é básico' will get you further than perfect grammar delivered stiffly.
Memorize your two rescue phrases. "Pode falar devagar, por favor?" and "Pode repetir, por favor?" turn a panic moment into a manageable one. Know them cold.
Personalize your script now, before you need it. Fill in your real name, country, job, and reason for learning, and rehearse your version. Don't wait until you're face to face with your partner's mother to figure out what to say.
