Hi, I'm Dra. Carla Dias — founder of HappyPortuguese. I teach Brazilian Portuguese to adults, executives, CELPE-Bras candidates, and children of parents who want a real teacher, not an app. Your first class is free — a real lesson, not a sales call.

Download the guide that teaches you how Brazilians actually talk — and start speaking with confidence from your first conversation.

Three things make HappyPortuguese different from everything else you've tried.
Carla earned her doctorate in Portuguese Philology from USP — Brazil's top university. She's spent twelve years teaching Portuguese, not just speaking it. There's a real difference between a tutor and a teacher, and you'll feel it in your first class.
Most online Portuguese teachers improvise. Carla follows a method she's refined across thousands of teaching hours — adults, executives, kids, certification candidates. You'll know exactly what you're learning, why, and what comes next.
Not the textbook version. Not the European version. The Portuguese you'll actually hear in São Paulo, Rio, and Salvador — including the slang, the rhythm, and the warmth. Taught by someone who grew up speaking it.
A few of the doctors, executives, parents, and serious learners who've studied with Dra. Carla — across eight countries and counting.
"Carla loves Portuguese and can explain grammar even to someone whose native language has nothing in common with it. I started lessons to improve my everyday Portuguese, then decided to sit the CELPE-Bras exam. Carla knew exactly what kinds of tasks appear on the test and what I needed to practice. The lessons were well structured and she was always thoroughly prepared. Thanks to her, nothing on the exam surprised me and I reached the C1 level. I recommend her 100%."

"I needed CELPE-Bras to validate my degree in Brazil and I'd already failed once on my own. Carla knew the exam inside out, the writing tasks, the oral, exactly where I was losing points. She drilled the part I was weakest at instead of the part I liked. I passed at the level I needed the second time. I honestly don't think I would have without her."
"I was nervous my daughter would treat it like extra homework and resist it. The opposite happened. She actually looks forward to her class with Carla, and she's started using little Portuguese phrases at home without me asking. Carla makes it feel like play but she's clearly teaching real things. As a Brazilian mom raising a kid in the US, this took a weight off my shoulders."

"We're an English-Portuguese household, but both my kids were answering me only in English — it broke my heart a little. My youngest is eight and my oldest is 11, and they're at totally different levels, but Carla just got each of them. Six months in, my son is reading children's books in Portuguese on his own, and my daughter actually asks to have her classes. They're talking to their grandparents in Brazil now. That's everything to me."
"I'll be honest, I almost didn't pay for lessons because I figured I could keep using free apps. The apps got me a pile of vocabulary I couldn't actually use in a conversation. With Carla it finally connected, because she made me talk from the first class and fixed the things I didn't even know I was getting wrong. Completely different from an app. I just wish I'd started with her instead of wasting a year."

"My husband is Brazilian but he travels constantly, and I don't speak a word of Portuguese, so keeping it alive for our son felt impossible. I honestly felt guilty that I couldn't help. Carla changed that. She gives him real, consistent Portuguese every week no matter how crazy our schedule gets, and she sends me little notes on what they covered so I can follow along even though I don't speak it. My son is reading now, and he's so proud of it. I finally feel like we're not letting this slip away."
A 30-minute placement session — not a sales call. We'll figure out your level, your goals, and what's been getting in your way.
After the placement session, I send you a written plan: which program fits, how often to study, what to expect. No pressure to enroll.
Weekly classes, materials between sessions, and WhatsApp for quick questions.
After 12 weeks, you'll feel the difference. After six months, you'll have real conversations. After a year, you'll be fluent — if you put in the work.

I'm a passionate Portuguese teacher, a lifelong language nerd, and — if you'll let me — your future learning buddy. I was born and raised in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, and hold a PhD in Portuguese Philology from USP, Brazil's top university. For over twelve years I've taught students all over the world: heritage speakers, business professionals, CELPE-Bras candidates, kids, and a few diplomats along the way.
My approach is different. I teach real Brazilian Portuguese — the warm, expressive, alive version you actually hear in Brazil — through real conversation, not isolated grammar rules. And I treat every student as a person with their own goals, never just a level in a textbook.
I also believe learning should feel good. Our classes are warm, patient, and genuinely fun — you'll make mistakes, we'll laugh about them, and you'll get better faster because you're enjoying it.
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Your first 30-minute class is free. It is a real lesson on Zoom with Dra. Carla, not a sales call. You will get a level assessment and a personalised study plan to take with you, with no credit card and no obligation to continue.
Dra. Carla runs a real 30-minute diagnostic session — not a sales call. She will assess your current level across speaking, listening, and reading; identify your main gaps and strengths; and recommend the most suitable program and pace for your goals. You will receive a written summary of your level and a personalised study plan within 24 hours.
Plans are monthly and include 4 classes per month (one per week). Group classes start at $76/month ($19/class); individual 1:1 plans start at $88/month ($22/class). A single drop-in class is $25 — class only, no extras. CELPE-Bras Prep is $180/month. Business Portuguese starts from $200/month. Every monthly plan includes Google Classroom access, a summary PDF after every class, and one cultural session per month. Full pricing and plan details are on the Pricing page.
A class credit is one prepaid class slot. Standard monthly plans come with 4 credits (one per week). One credit is used per class attended. Credits do not expire — unused credits carry over indefinitely if your schedule changes. Credits can also be purchased as standalone class packs outside of a monthly plan.
All classes are held live on Zoom. Before your first class you receive a recurring Zoom link. Between sessions, materials, exercises, and weekly videos or songs are shared through Google Classroom — a private space set up specifically for your program. No special software beyond Zoom is needed.
You can reschedule an individual class with at least 24 hours' notice at no penalty. Either party can cancel ongoing classes at any time with 15 calendar days' notice by email. If you cancel with the required notice, any amount already paid for that month is refunded, with only the classes already taken deducted. A class missed without notice is counted as delivered.
Booking a free first class is the best way to find out — Dra. Carla will assess your level and recommend the right path. As a rough guide: choose CELPE-Bras Prep if you need the Brazilian certification for work, study, or citizenship; Business Portuguese if you are a professional working with Brazilian clients; Adult Classes for personal or ongoing study; Young Learners for a child or teenager aged 5–17.
