Reading Guide · By Age Band

The Brazilian Kids' Bookshelf

Recommended Brazilian children's books, organized by age — with reading levels, where to buy, and notes for parents. Updated regularly.

Age band:

How to use this page

Find your child's age band below. Within each band, books are sorted from easiest to most advanced and tagged by reading level, so you can match the book to your child's actual Portuguese — not just their age. A child who's new to Portuguese should start a level or two below their age band; a child who grew up hearing it can reach higher.

The reading levels:

A note for heritage families

If your child understands Portuguese but resists reading it, start below their age level — even a few levels down. The goal is to rebuild confidence and make reading feel easy and fun again, not to challenge them. A book that's "too easy" but finished with a smile does more than a "right level" book abandoned in frustration. Move up only when they're ready.
