The meaning behind the choice
Both por and para can translate as “for,” but para points toward an endpoint while por explains the path, cause, exchange, or means.
Do not begin by translating one English word into Portuguese. Begin with the relationship you want to express: destination or purpose, state or manner, familiarity or factual knowledge, movement toward or fixed location. The form becomes easier when the meaning is clear.
- Destination or recipient → para
- Purpose or intended use → para
- Deadline → para
- Cause or motivation → por
- Duration, route, or means → por
- Exchange or price → por
Examples you can reuse
Read each pair aloud and explain why the highlighted choice fits the message. Then change the person, time, place, or object while preserving the same contrast.

The mistakes learners make most often
Most errors happen when a learner memorizes a translation but misses the context. Use these warning signs to slow down and choose deliberately.
- Translating every “for” with para
- Using para for duration
- Forgetting contractions: pelo, pela, pelos, pelas
- Treating the rule as physical movement only
A five-minute practice loop
Say the answer before looking at a rule. Explain your choice in one short phrase. Change one detail and answer again. The goal is not to recite terminology; it is to recognize the meaning quickly enough for conversation.
- Name a destination and a route
- Give a purpose and a cause
- Set a deadline and a duration
- Write one thank-you sentence with por
