The meaning behind the choice
The choice is not simply formal versus informal. Region, age, relationship, setting, and local agreement patterns all influence what sounds natural.
Do not begin by translating one English word into Portuguese. Begin with the relationship you want to express: destination or purpose, state or manner, familiarity or factual knowledge, movement toward or fixed location. The form becomes easier when the meaning is clear.
- Você + third-person verb: você fala
- Standard tu + second-person verb: tu falas
- Regional speech may use tu fala
- O senhor/a senhora can mark respect or distance
- Subject choice and object pronouns may mix in real speech
- Mirror local usage gradually rather than performing an accent

The mistakes learners make most often
Most errors happen when a learner memorizes a translation but misses the context. Use these warning signs to slow down and choose deliberately.
- Calling one form universally formal or informal
- Using tu with você’s possessives without noticing the mix
- Correcting a regional pattern as if it were ignorance
- Overusing o senhor/a senhora until it sounds distant
